Drills and Chills: Going To The Dentist

Do you suffer from odontophobia aka dental anxiety? There’s a good chance the answer to that question is, YES! In fact 75% of Americans experience some degree of dental fear, from mild to severe. I’d say I’m somewhere in the middle. What if I told you your next trip to the dentist could be more like a spa outing? Well, maybe not quite. But there is something I think all dental phobics should look into.

I don’t want to feel a thing! Instead, my dentist recommended NuCalm. Have you heard of it?  It’s an all natural, drug free option to alleviate anxiety and stress.

NuCalm Product PhotoHere’s how it works. It involves taking chewable amino acid pills for relaxation, using micro current stimulation patches placed on either side of your ears, headphones for soothing music and black-out glasses to keep you calm and focused.

My dentist was one of the first to use it in a clinical trial in 2009. Six years later, he says it’s changed dentistry for everyone concerned. “Since my patients are so relaxed …I am more relaxed and can do my best work ever. Being able to focus on the dentistry and not the patient stress about being in my dental chair is a win-win for both myself and my patients,” said Dr. Peter Harnois of Hinsdale Dentistry.

NuCalm - Clinical Environment The American Dental Association says more than 60-million Americans a year avoid dental care mostly because of fear and anxiety. Are you one of them? If so, that’s not good. Did you know the health of your mouth can also determine the health of your entire body? Bad oral health has been linked to heart disease, premature birth and many other medical issues.

So maybe this might make that trip a little easier for you. I used it, and must admit I was pretty nervous it WASN’T going to work. But I have to say the experience was good. And because there are no drugs, I was able to get up and drive myself home.  It’s not new, but many dentist’s may not have it. That’s why I wanted to tell you about it. I’m not getting paid by the manufacturer, I just want you to be an informed consumer.

The company says the version out today has improved since it was first released. They’ve even created a cream/lotion component for patients who can’t chew pills.  NuCalm says more people are using it for other purposes such as cancer patients, airline pilots and celebrities for stress and relaxation.

Dr. Harnois says even our beloved Chicago Blackhawks credit NuCalm with helping them win the Stanley Cup Championships. The players reportedly use it not only for stress, but to improve sleep quality and help with muscle recovery and healing.

Wow! Sounds like some crazy snake oil, right?  Too good to be true? Well, I don’t know about all of those other uses, but I can tell you from my experience, it was a great alternative to medication. The next time I have to have dental work done, hopefully that won’t be for a long, long time, I’m going with the NuCalm and maybe a glass of wine afterward!

Tell me what you do to make your dental experience better?
