Brat and the Kids of Warriors

By | Sylvia's Blog | 2 Comments

If someone called you a brat, chances are you’d be insulted. It may seem like a derogatory word describing a spoiled child. But no, there is another definition. One that fills those who proudly call themselves “brat” with a sense of pride and patriotism.

Behind the scenes of my interview with author Michael Joseph Lyons

They are the children of career military personnel. I’m one of them, an “army brat.” So imagine how excited I was when approached by a fellow brat to do a video trailer for a new book called Brat and the Kids of Warriors. The author is army brat and former army officer Michael J. Lyons. Read More

Jilian Nordmeyer

Jilian Nordmeyer turned 13 while in the hospital receiving treatment for cancer.

Imagine as a child spending your birthday in the hospital, out of town and far away from home. That’s what happened to one Colorado girl while visiting Chicago. Jilian Nordmeyer and her family were on a summer vacation when she became seriously ill. Her mother, Amanda, said, “She was throwing up and vomiting and couldn’t keep fluids down, and it was a very rapid illness.”

Within 24-hours came the shocking diagnosis…. Jillian had cancer.  “I can see it in her face when they talk about the medication and stuff, and she’s 13 today. She shouldn’t have to worry about all this madness,” said Amanda.

That diagnosis meant weeks of undergoing treatment. It was not how the Nordmeyer family envisioned they would be celebrating Jilian’s milestone birthday. They knew they needed something special, so they were connected with an organization called Icing Smiles. And on her birthday, Jillian was surprised with a special cake baked just for her. Read More

I’m baaaack! On TV that is. Excited to announce that I will be back on Chicagoland TV with FOX 32 News beginning in October.

When I left TV news in 2013, I knew I wasn’t done telling stories. That’s why I started my own production company to produce stories that people would be interested in and really care about. I am so excited to be able to continue to do that now on a larger platform with FOX 32 News.

Whether it be medical, consumer or human interest, I want to do stories that will have a social impact and that viewers will be interested in watching. Read More

Anita Alvarez: Her Side of the Story

By | Heavy Hitters, Sylvia's Blog | 31 Comments

Outgoing Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez says the fall she took once the public learned of the shooting death of Chicago teen Laquan McDonald is unjustified, and she blames Mayor Rahm Emanuel for allowing her to take the fall when she says many at City Hall knew about the video showing Chicago police officer Jason Van Dyke shooting McDonald 16 times, even as he lay on the pavement. She speaks exclusively with Sylvia Perez as part one of the new web series “Heavy Hitters.”

Heavy Hitters: Anita Alvarez

By | Sylvia's Blog | 2 Comments

It’s been months in the making. I’ve been putting together a wish list of names, and now it’s finally happening. As a journalist, storytelling is a natural desire of mine that constantly needs to be nurtured. It’s a passion that drives my sense of fulfillment.

That’s why I am very excited to announce my new venture, a web series called Heavy Hitters.  It’s all about movers and shakers. People we all know or have heard about. They are headline newsmakers, politicians, successful business people, sports figures, chefs and celebrities. We know their faces, we’ve heard their names, but how much do we really know about them? Why I Won’t Live in Fear

By | Sylvia's Blog | 4 Comments

The news was the first alert I saw on my phone when I woke up that morning. March 22nd, 2016. Coordinated terrorist attacks in Brussels, Belgium. Dozens injured and many casualties. Police looking for suspects. Eventually our biggest fear came true, ISIS claims responsibility.
Bombings and shootings are becoming all too common and it seems to be happening everywhere. Despite the frequency, it still comes as a shock and rocks our world. But this time what happened in Europe was especially frightening to me. I was leaving the next day for France to visit my college daughter who is attending school abroad.

Supper With Sylvia-Nabuki

By | On Sylvia's Mind | No Comments

Even though I’m a suburban girl, I prefer dinner downtown and trying out new restaurants. But sometimes, it’s nice not having to deal with all the traffic and finding something wonderful in your own backyard.

That’s exactly what I’ve located in historic downtown Hinsdale. It’s a Japanese sushi restaurant called Nabuki. A hidden gem that the locals know all about. From the creative rolls to the fresh and delicious raw tuna and sashimi, every bite is a pleasure.
